Reference materials are used for the calibration and quality control of XRF spectrometers. Finding the right standards for an application is a difficult task due to the wide range of internationally available materials.

Types of Reference Materials

Reference Material (RM): A general term for materials that are sufficiently homogeneous and stable to be used in measurement.
Certified Reference Material (CRM): A special type of RM that is certified through a valid procedure for one or more specified properties.

It includes a certificate of analysis stating the property values, uncertainty, and a statement of metrological traceability.
Metrological traceability means the measurement can be compared to other measurements across different times, places, and equipment by being linked to a reference.
